Iron Overload
Category: Sickle Cell Information
Blood tranfusions are an important part of treatment for many patients who are living with Sickle Cell Disease. But did you know 10 or more blood tranfusions in your lifetime can lead to Iron Overload. A simple blood test, called serum ferritin ( see-rum fair-ah-tin) test, measures how much iron is in your blood. A serum ferritin level above 1000 mcg/L may lead to Iron Overload. If left unmanaged excess iron may lead to organ damage.
